Civil Rights
In addition to the protections provided by federal law, Californians are protected by some of the strongest civil rights statutes in the nation. Whether in housing, employment, or places of public accommodation, those who live or visit California have a right to be free from discrimination, harassment, and retaliation based on multiple categories, including sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, race, and disability, among others.
California also prohibits sexual harassment in business, service, or professional relationships. Under this statute, a person is liable for sexual harassment if:
• there is (or was) a business, service, or professional relationship between the plaintiff and the defendant, or
• the person holds themselves out as being able to help the plaintiff establish a business, service or professional relationship with the defendant or a third party.
The Law Office of Melanie Proctor focuses on claims arising out of employment (including contract employees) or business, service, or professional relationships. If you’ve experienced discrimination, harassment, or retaliation, it’s important to act quickly to preserve your legal rights. Contact the office to find out more.
